Many lengthy articles and studies have been written about best practices for retaining online students. However, one the most effective practices is frequent and positive communication with the student by the instructor. It might sound overly simple but it works.
Too many students express frustration over not being able to get answers from their online instructors in a timely manner (if ever). Many complain their assignments are not graded soon enough to give them feedback for the subsequent coursework.
These communication delays can cause students to become frustrated, give up, drop the course, or fail.
